Dr. Barkhurst is a 2001 graduate of Washington State Univeristy and has been involved with Veterinary Medicine for over 30 years. Originally from Oregon, she is an avid 49ers fan and wanted to be closer to the Bay come football season. She purchased Gualala Veterinary Clinic in October 2023 after falling in love with Gualala on her first visit. She and her husband have two children. Her daughter Makayla is currently enrolled in Vet School at Oregon State University and the clinic will be home to her as well in a few years. Her son is enrolled at the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!), pursuing a career in human endocrinology. She currently has four horses, a cat and two dogs (a rat terrier and French bulldog that you will occassionally hear voicing opinions at the clinic).
Dr. Vickers graduated with his DVM from Oklahoma State University, and then obtained a Master of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (MPVM) degree focused on the epidemiology of animal disease at UC Davis.
During his career he has had the privilege of working with cats and dogs, livestock, zoo animals, pet birds, reptiles, other exotic pets, and wildlife. He has always had a strong interest in the health of domestic animals like dogs and cats, and the linkage to the health of wildlife and people. For over 20 years he has worked not only with domestic animals but also with the One Health Institute at UC Davis doing research into these connections and serving in a veterinary role in oil spill response.
He and his wife Susan migrated north from southern California several years ago and to the Gualala area last year. They have two children and four grandchildren, and love to hike, bike, and travel in the outdoors. They currently share their home with 2 kitties - Pangje, and Olivia. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Barkhurst and the great staff at Gualala Veterinary Clinic as he gets to know this wonderful area.
Kayla is a second-year vet student at Oregon State University at the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been hovering in vet clinics since she could walk and started working in them once she turned 15. She has a particular interest in small animal urgent care, ultrasonography, cardiology, and pet nutrition.
Kayla has a 1.5-year-old Frenchie named Phantom, who is actively pursuing a degree in "How to get your human through vet school". She also has a 6-year-old Leopard Appy named Napoleon.
In her spare time, Kayla is an avid weightlifter. She also enjoys reading, taking Phantom for long walks on the beach, and watching 49ers football games.
Dana is a motivated team player with a passion for learning and a background in education. She loves animals and enjoys demonstrating compassionate empathy. She is a self-proclaimed film-buff and avid Stephen King fan. When she's not working she's hanging out on the couch with kids, cats, and dogs.
Born and raised in Gualala, and now raising her family in Annapolis. Raenie is a well-known friendly face in our community, and often the first person you speak to in the clinic. She previously worked at a local hardware store, so there are not many faces she doesn't know.
She enjoys living the simple life with her large family and her herd of animals: her pet cats Buzz and Shay, pet pig Pamela Beesly, her dog Mr. Boy (who can often be found napping under the front desk - please say hello, he likes treats). Raenie has always had a passion for animals, and has always said they make a family complete.
When Raenie is not at work she enjoys gardening, riding ATVs, camping, cooking for her family, trying new recipes, and working hand-in-hand in the kitchen with her daughters. Understanding that family always comes first, Raenie takes great pride in making sure that you and your fury family members leave the clinic smiling.
Hello,
My name is Tia. I'm in school for Equine Science & love going to horse shows. I consider myself a bird enthusiast & have a strong interest in exotic animal care.
Born and raised on the Mendonoma coast, Kaeley has a deep appreciation for the area and community. She loves being able to assist in helping your beloved animals. Growing up having animals her entire life, she feels that no family is totally complete until there’s a pet - besides what would you do in your spare time if not constantly cleaning up animal hair?
She and her husband share their home with their cherished animals; their pittie/catahoula mix Chomper - whose name can be deceiving because he’d only ever hurt a fly (he dislikes them just as much as his humans do) and Pepper their sweet tortie cat who thinks she’s one of their big dogs and would do just about anything for a treat.
In her down time (other than cleaning up pet hair), Kaeley enjoys working in her garden, foraging for mushrooms with Chomper - often times in the same forest she spent her childhood exploring, spending time with her family, taking her dogs to the river, cooking new dishes, crocheting, baking bread, and watching her dogs and cat roll around in the grass together.
